Sunday BBQ, Baseball, and Rosé
The weather on Sunday was beautiful and we were lucky to have tickets to the 1:05pm Red Sox game, which means we were able to spend a lot of time outside enjoying the weather.
Before the game, we grabbed lunch at Sweet Cheeks Q in the Fenway neighborhood. While restaurants in this area can’t compete with our favorite BBQ place in the world — Pappy’s Smokehouse in St. Louis — Sweet Cheeks is one of our favorite New England BBQ and we always have a good meal there. As predicted, I started off with a Bantam Wunderkind cider, which, as you likely already know by now, is my favorite cider.
We each ordered a legendary biscuit and the house made strawberry jam was definitely my jam. It had the perfect amount of sweetness that was perfectly balanced with the honey butter. This is the best biscuit I’ve ever had, as they are flakey and light despite their size.
For lunch, we shared a Fat Cheeks Tray and choose three meats: pulled chicken, pulled port, and pork ribs. For our sides, we had the broccoli cheese casserole and the potato salad. All of the meat was good but it is always missing the smokey flavor that make really good Midwestern BBQ. The chicken is moist and the meat on the ribs falls right off. Dan is obsessed with the broccoli cheese casserole and wishes he could take home a big tray of it when we leave. It is very light and fluffy, and is the best broccoli cheese casserole both of us have ever had. The potato salad is good but nothing very special — especially when compared to the casserole. I like the house made BBQ sauce, which isn’t overly spicy or sweet, which is why I like it.
Following lunch, we headed over to Fenway Park to catch the 1:05pm Red Sox game against the Chicago White Sox. While it wasn’t a very good game (we lost), the weather was great and I enjoyed sitting outside even though I ended up with a sun burn. Our seats were four rows from the field on the third base side next to the away dugout, which offer an excellent view of the ballpark. (I am fortunate to get free company seats throughout the season.) We also noticed that Fenway Park was celebrating Pride Weekend with a rainbow flag on the main flagpole.
On our way home, I made a quick stop at Cardullo’s in Harvard Square to do some Rosé shopping. Planning ahead for a trip to the Berkshires, I picked up some Wolffer №139 Dry Rosé Cider (a new find and favorite) and Banshee Rosé wine so we can enjoy various Rosé when attending Tanglewood later in the Summer.
It was great being out and about on a sunny Sunday in Boston to enjoy a good lunch and spend some time outside watching the baseball game. I’m also looking forward to having some good Rosé later in August (unless I decide to dig into it sooner!).
