Sunday night the stars of television all gathered for the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards. Stephen Colbert hosted the big event and the night gave us tons of hilarious moments (RuPaul as the Emmy? Yes please!).

One thing was prevalent, the causes the actors and actresses care about were in the spotlight. One of the biggest fashion statements of the Emmy’s was the blue ribbon. Pinned on numerous actors and actresses outfits for the night, these stars, including Rashida Jones, Riz Ahmed, and Kathryn Hahn, were showing their support for the ACLU and Dream Act.

Another honorable statement at the Emmy’s was the blue “&” pin. The ampersand symbolizes solidarity with the LGBTQ community and support for GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). Orphan Black actress Tatiana Maslany and Westworld actress Tessa Thompson proudly rocked their pins.

Lena Waithe recognized and thanked the LGBTQIA community when accepting her Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and she is now the first black woman to win in the category. “The things that make us different, those are our superpowers. Every day when you walk out the door, put on your imaginary cape, and go out there and conquer the world. Because the world would not be as beautiful as it is if we weren’t in it.”

One of the big winners of the night was Nicole Kidman, who won Best Actress in a Limited Series for Big Little Lies. She used part of her acceptance time to share why it was important to show a story with domestic violence. Big Little Lies won 5 Emmys including Outstanding Limited Series, and it gave them the perfect opportunity to share why we need powerful stories focused on women, written by women, and making women the heroes. #GirlPower.

Dave Chappelle, who didn’t have a chance to practice his presentation, gave an impromptu shout out to DC Public Schools for his ability to read off the teleprompter. John Oliver, winner of 2 awards, used his second acceptance speech to attempt to get DC Public Schools trending on twitter. The school district’s response on Twitter was priceless.
