I’ve never doubted
that we share
intricate details
that we never knew
we had in common.

That connection
when I least expected,
when my friends
left the field,
you were there
to keep me company.

You, stepping away
just enough from
your side of the fence
to give me a hand
and pull me up.

Thanks, for being kind
and not holding grudges
after debates or arguments.

You enrich my world
with your views and
I hope that I enrich
yours.

In the end, who are we
but souls who are longing
to reach one another in
harmony breathing love
into each other.

In conflict, doubt, we may
shout our stands, but we
never forget that we are
but a tiny fraction of one.

I wrote this poem for those conversations that I embarked on that ended with both sides feeling heard. Although I’ve consciously reached out to start these conversations this year, I never anticipated learnings that filled me with new understanding about the world.

After the election, no matter what side you are on, I hope that you reach out across our very divided line to talk to someone on the other side. It’s heartwarming to find common ground.

Honestly! It’s about time for some re-building.
