January 2016 is March of Dimes Month in Toronto

All text the city,
WHEREAS March of Dimes was established in 1951 to fund research and provide medical assistance to individuals with polio, a highly contagious and at times disabling and fatal disease.
Mothers across the country were determined to find a polio vaccine and canvassed door-to-door, raising funds one dime at a time. They became known as the Marching Mothers and thanks to their determination and efforts, in 1955 the Salk vaccine was declared safe for use.
With the threat of polio greatly diminished, March of Dimes Canada grew into a multi-service organization that shifted its mandate to providing a variety of much-needed programs and services to children and adults living with disabilities.
March of Dimes Canada is now the largest charitable rehabilitation organization in Ontario and helps over 60,000 people annually in communities across the country. The organization is dedicated to providing One Stop: Opportunities for Independence for people with disabilities.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor John Tory, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim January 2016 as “March of Dimes Month” in the City of Toronto and encourage everyone to support the annual door-to-door campaign that raises funds to enhance the independence of people living with disabilities.
