Why 32.768 kHz frequency crystal oscillator is used in many RTC watches and Timers? Have you wondered why the magic number 32,768KH is used?

Standard 'Watch' or Real-Time-Clock crystal. 32.768kHz means it is precisely half of a 16-bit counter. Start counting at 0x8000 (or 32768). When the counter rolls over from 65535 to 0, then you know that exactly one second has passed (from Sparkfun);

Accuracy is typically ±20ppm at room temperature (+25°C). This is the equivalent of gaining or losing 1.7 seconds of time each day, or 10.34 minutes per year. (from maximintegrated.com)

Are quartz watches always more accurate than mechanical ones? Typically they are, but not always. Accuracy and precision are not exactly the same thing (more information read this article)

While some people desire wristwatches with extremely high accuracy over long periods of time, it is seldom for any reason besides personal satisfaction. The few professions that depend on precision time synchronization (such as astronomy, global navigation, train scheduling, and broadcasting) base their operations on high precision time sources, not consumer wristwatches.

Back to 32kHz…when the timer or RTC peripheral clock is selected as 32,768 Hertz it will give an exact one-second delay on the overflow. 32,768 is the power of two — yes — two power of 15 is equal to 32,768. It will give a precise one second period when the fifteen stage binary counter is used. The frequency of a real-time clock varies with the application. The frequency 32768 Hz (32.768 kHz) is commonly used because it is a power of 2 (215) value. And, you can get a precise 1 second period (1 Hz frequency) by using a 15 stage binary counter.

Practically, in the majority of the applications, particularly digital, the current consumption has to be as low as possible to preserve battery life. So, this frequency is selected as the best compromise between low frequency and convenient manufacture with market availability and real estate in term of the physical dimension;
