Comparison Is the Death of Joy — How I Manage Bull-Shit Expectations.

Somewhere in the middle of The Karoo, South Africa

My hair gets curlier when I leave the city.. There’s no WiFi here. But, at least there is a set of encyclopaedias in my airbnb room. I read something interesting today. You know those “oh shit” moments you get when coming across a perspective so direct. It was — “comparison is the the death of joy”. You’re only unhappy when measuring experiences against others expectations.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of the few things in life we control is our reaction to things. It’s probably actually the only thing we can control. I think about this a lot. I’m so quick to react, because it’s easy. What if I took the time.. listened more. Immediate reactions lead to unnecessary emotions. We tend to make situations more complicated than they need to be by reacting without a deep breath.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀
I’ve started to just enjoy things for what they are. If I run, fuck the 3 minute 1km, I just want to enjoy the feeling it gives me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The number of people who complain about something new that didn’t exist five minutes ago is a testament to the negative power of expectations.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A good experience should always leave you smiling, rather than disappointed because it didn’t measure up to a story you made up. That’s all an expectation is.

Side note: We could all use a little help when it comes to putting our project, business or personal brand out there. If you are looking for a new website, branding or just want to nail your digital strategy. Check out our startup — Blimp | Where Startup’s Shop For Digital Marketing.
