LESS WORDS

There are so many words.

Words to read and read and read
Facebook and news and blogs and magazines
Menus and texts and billboards and Instagram.

Even thinking it through now,
I use words.

In my mind, I’m dragging behind everyone else,
Holding on to the rope pulling me through town
Racing to keep up so I’ll be informed.
So, I’ll be included.
Always feeling behind.
Lacking in capacity to engage it all.
All the time.

Then I sit pre-dawn in the quiet of a Kenyan morning
As the birds start their cacophony of song.
One by one rising to meet the day.

No words here.

All of a sudden, I am one with the universe.
Included and loved.
My heart is spacious and at rest.
I notice the light of the day unfolding.

Stillness.

Solitude.

Quiet.

Wordless.

Less words.

I will step back into the words.
That is the nature of this life.
But perhaps
The truest language of all
Is where there are no . . .
