What You Should Consider Before Choosing A Monitor for Video Editing
If you search monitors online, you’ll be flooded with choices and many of them are not going to be able to help you edit that video you just spent days shooting so it looks amazing.
You need to know what to look for. We feel that these are the specs and features you should consider before buying anything.
Screen Resolution
If you’re recording video in 4K and can afford a monitor that displays in 4K, you should get one. If your existing system is 1080p compatible and you’re not ready to upgrade just yet, you can edit 4K footage using proxies on a 1080p monitor. If you’re doing any color-grading, you will be better off opting to go with a monitor with a 4K resolution.
Supported Video Resolutions
Many monitors these days will support a wide range of input resolutions. However, when you’re using a format on the higher or lower ends of the spectrum or less common frame rates, then it is important to confirm that the monitor is compatible.
Screen size
Having a large screen is important because it will allow you to see many different pieces of your project at once. Look for a monitor that is large enough to provide you with comfortable, extended viewing sessions (which are common when editing video). The last thing you want to do is strain your eyes when working on an important project.
Connectivity
You want to make sure that your display is compatible with your computer’s video output. These inputs can include HDMI, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, USB, and optical variations. Some monitors provide audio I/O options so you can split out any embedded audio to external speakers.
