re: Complexity as Paradigm Shift
An excellent post, Mike, and timely .. a paradigm shift from linear/causal thinking to something better is long overdue. But two of your readers called it out .. Jacky Smith & Fred Ermlich.. and it’s called complexity.
What’s ironic is that the complexity model, rooted in chaos theory, is not that new. The decades you and Kuhn talk about needing .. because yes, paradigm change takes time .. are in progress, and have been since the 70’s.
But more fascinating to me, I believe it was Immanuel Kant who laid the original foundation for this shift over 200 years ago. Intrigued? So was I !! But I’ll share that Kuhn’s Structure (1962) was highly instrumental in my thought process. Why? Realizing that we need significant numbers of experts to be comfortable challenging deeply held “truths” before paradigm change can succeed. When I stumbled on a copy of Kuhn’s book at B&N 10 years ago, I literally ran home and devoured it. My thoughts on Kant and his 1781 Categorical Framework evolved from there.
I’m writing on Kant & Complexity here on Medium, would love your thoughts ..
