Return to Roan Mountain
Haiku
Morning mist, asleep,
in yellow-orange, as sentries
wake, for dawn’s embrace.
— Sunrise #2, 2021
Since traditional haiku was about the seasons, nature always played a part. For me, a beautiful sunrise emotes the promise of a fresh beginning.
I also love some anthropomorphic turns — as if nature could speak — who would imagine such a thing?
This was taken in September 2017, a rare but determined mission to climb out of a perfectly comfortably bed to chase a sunrise. This trek took me among the ridges of Carolina’s Pisgah Forest, ending on Roan Mountain, at the NC-TN line.
I’ve written more on the back story if you’re curious.
As the hawk flies, this spot is not far from our mountain house. Worth it, I think. I will be back.
Find me on Twitter, Instagram and of course here on Medium. I love this place. And check out my new pub, JUST CURIOUS, a water-cooler for questioning hearts and minds. Stop in, and let’s connect.
