A BUSINESS SHORT
Denny's Is Trying to Stay Alive
It's an iconic place, but times are changing
The other day, I went to Denny's for breakfast at 4:30 a.m. My friends wondered why I did that.
The simple reason is I was hungry.
I had taken a family member to the airport for an early flight. Driving home, my grandson and I decided we wanted breakfast.
Due to the time, we only had two choices: Denny's or Whataburger. Both have 24-hour service.
We decided on Denny's.
When we arrived, the parking lot was empty, and the building appeared closed. One lonely car was parked behind it, although it looked like it had been abandoned.
The sign on the door said open, while a billboard reminded drivers that they were open 24 hours a day. But looking at an empty parking lot with only a few lights inside gave it an eerie abandoned look.
We spotted a lady in a Denny's uniform sitting on a bench, which was encouraging. I had my grandson go ask her if they were open. I told him to go in, signaling me to park the car if she said yes.
Remarkably, he opened the front door, disappearing inside.
