I Never Thought I Would Enjoy Owning a Toy Dog Named Joan, But She is a Little Bundle of Joy
Her real name is Coco
Who names their dog Joan?
I do.
And there’s a backstory that explains why.
One day, my four-year-old granddaughter walked into my office and said, “Mom bought a pomegranate.”
I didn’t pay much attention, but I smiled and nodded in my typical grandfatherly way. I knew the family enjoyed eating pomegranates.
A few minutes later, my adult daughter appeared holding a small, black, fuzzy animal with a fox face. It was barely the size of a shoe box.
She introduced me to Coco, a Pomeranian she had just picked up.
Remembering the conversation with the four-year-old, I quickly connected the dots. Pomegranate in four-year-old speak is Pomeranian in adult speak.
It didn’t surprise me that she had gotten another dog. Three weeks before, our oldest dog died. She had aged out; her hips had lost their mobility, and a cancer diagnosis didn’t help.
We got over the loss and went on with our lives. But minus one dog left a hole that needed to be filled.
