Netflix in April — Easter Eggs & Red Pandas

Aggretsuko, the angry red panda, is coming to Netflix this month.

This winter has been particularly cold so, in February, I was eager to watch the news about Groundhog Day to see if my misery would end soon. To my disappointment, even our furry friends were in disagreement.

Shubenacadie Sam of Nova Scotia waddled around, signalling an early end to winter, but both Wiarton Willie of Ontario and Punxsutawney Phil of Pennsylvania saw their shadows, which meant more winter! Which is it? As the last weeks of winter waned and spring begins, I am still cold, confused, and…cold. Did I say cold? Good thing I have Netflix.

Notable New Releases

• Aggretsuko — this is an anime about Hello Kitty’s angry and aggressive red panda friend, Retsuko. This panda is an underappreciated fellow working as an office associate in the accounting department of a big company, and takes out frustration by performing heavy metal karaoke.
• The Week Of — I am excited for this one, seriously. Adam Sandler and Chris Rock, together? Adam and Chris are playing the parents who are making final preparations for a big wedding of their son and daughter. Adam’s deal with Netflix is done after this movie, so fans, look alive!
• Amateur — tells the story of a 14-year-old basketball prodigy that is recruited into an elite school, but is faced with corruption and greed that exists in amateur sports. The film was funded on Kickstarter, which is super neat!

The Highlights

• Along Came Polly — Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller take the lead in this 2004 classic rom-com perfect for a relaxing date night. Ben plays Reuben, an insurance underwriter, who is honeymooning with his wife. He soon discovers her cheating on him with the scuba instructor. Reuben, obviously, flies back to New York and eventually meets Polly played by Jennifer. Typical, predictable, but good.
• Body of Lies — Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe team up in this thriller / spy blockbuster, following the CIA and Jordanian Intelligence in their attempts to catch a terrorist. The story plays a stark contrast in the way that the US and the Middle East handle special ops — a must-see for action fans!
• The Duchess — Keira Knightley plays Georgiana Cavendish, the Duchess of Devonshire, in this historic drama taking place in the UK. The picture won accolades for costume design, so definitely worth a watch.

Heavy Hitters

• Friday Night Lights — most possibly the fan favourite of sports dramas, FNL follows a high school football team in Texas. Aside from the amazing football, the show talks about many contemporary issues in small-town America, from family values to public funding to racism, drugs and abortion.
• Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest — does anyone not like Pirates? You can’t go wrong with Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney, and Orlando Bloom…and Johnny Depp. This is the second instalment in the Pirates series. Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the 6th!
• Scarface — hate it or love it, Scarface is a cult classic with a massive fan following. This 1983 crime fiction has Al Pacino rise to be the most powerful crime lord in Florida and one of the best onscreen mobsters of all time.
