The Fab 5 returns for Season 2!

It’s warming up, the trees are blooming, and school is almost out. That means it’s SUMMER! Patios, water parks, ice cream and outdoor concerts — it’s the best time to be alive in Canada!

For all you folks who want to sit around home a bit more before venturing out after your winter slumber, check out what Netflix is putting out this month!

Notable New Releases

  • Explained — this show dives into current events, and showcases some of the world’s most pressing topics, ranging from the racial wealth gap, monogamy, cryptocurrencies and the world of K-pop. Each episode runs only 15 minutes and arms viewers with the information they need to sound like a genius at the dinner table!
  • Marvel’s Luke Cage: Season 2 —I loved Season 1 of Luke Cage. I loved it so much that I started poking holes in my hoodie to emulate Luke’s outfit! In this new season, Luke goes head-to-head against the Bushmaster, a not-so-popular villain in the Marvel series. But who are we kidding. It doesn’t matter who the villain is — we’re just in it to see Luke kick some a**!
  • Set It UpZoey Deutch and Glen Powell play two underpaid, overworked assistants who try to hook up their bosses played by Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs. This rom-com is the classic Friday night popcorn movie-muncher! And P.S.: Zoey is the one from Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” music video.

The Highlights

  • Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist — is one of the cutest rom-coms of the 2000s, starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings. Nick, played by Mike, and Norah, played by Kat, are teenagers who pretend to be dating and of course, a love story blossoms. The film was featured at the Toronto International Film Festival and received rave reviews from critics, so it’s worth a shot.
  • Kim’s Convenience: Season 2 — filmed in Toronto, this is the second season following the Kims, a Korean-Canadian family, and their daily lives. This is a great show touching on important topics, including immigrant families, cultural identity, generational gap and family values.
  • Queer Eye: Season 2 — Bobby, Karamo, Tan, Antoni and Jonathan, the Queer Eye Fab Five, return for a new season in Georgia! This season will build on the first season, and will touch on new topics including self-love, faith, poke bowls and sexuality.

Heavy Hitters

  • Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok — possibly one of the best Marvel films created (definitely the best Thor film!). Thor starts off battling Surtur and the action doesn’t stop there. He then goes head-to-head against the Hulk and then his sister, Hela, in hopes of saving Asgard from destruction. Watch this!
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedimost, if not all, Star Wars fans have probably watched this latest instalment already, but there’s no harm in re-watching. Rey learns more about being a Jedi from Luke Skywalker while the Resistance prepares for a grand battle against the First Order.
  • Ghostbusters—is a reboot of the original film series featuring a group of four women who begin a business in New York City…catching ghosts! Each member brings unique skills and background, ranging from possessing exemplary knowledge about paranormal activity and the Manhattan subway system to nuclear engineering.
