Grassroots Reparation Advocates Wrote A Bill for a Reparations Task Force in Texas — But Abbott’s Office Can’t Find It

In the fall of 2022, Texas’ Grassroots Reparationists wrote a bill to create a Freedmen’s Bureau and establish a Texas Reparations Task Force and Commission. The purpose of the bill is to address genocidal harms and crimes against humanity against Descendants of US Chattel Slaves (aka American Freedmen, Foundational Black Americans, etc) in the State of Texas. The Task Force would create statewide restitution and restoration in the form of reparation payments, guarantees of non-repetition, and compassionate rehabilitation according to the international guidelines for reparations.

The Task Force and Commission shall examine various categories of harm, including health disparities, disproportionate mass incarceration, over-policing, housing discrimination, unjust property takings by eminent domain, and the devaluation of Freedmen-owned businesses.
