Still Life with Family Court

A Poem

At this point what even is a poem
days of thinking, waiting

distracted preoccupied
busy with the life of life,

the making each moment better and such the
awareness of the things that can be done

to make night time easier to make mornings easier to
make little girls feel loved and safe to make men feel seen and heard

to make homes feel neat and cozy to make calmness where there is
only anxiety and waiting inside

those who think life is their own have never had to go to family court
have never had to pray and pray that the judge sees the truth and does right

by their children have never had to know what it is like to have very little control over

even what the next month or summer might be like
to have to wait and wait and in this lose poems a bit lose the ability

to focus in to look at the things of the life of life and come at them with wonder and depth

you know the usual poetry stuff

the woman sits on the couch writing
the sun in pieces of light through the blinds

the child ready for school with lunch box and questions
the man ready for work with lunch box and determination

still life with family court we wait and wait
we pray and lift up the spirits of one another while we envision the best and

while the woman
the mother the mother the mother aches inside for whatever is left of her baby

girls childhood one taken and stained and snatched with grabs and power plays one in pieces in pieces in pieces

but like the light like the sun she shines through she will always
shine through this mother this daughter this

sacred little team of prayer and affirmation of manifestation
the depth and the wonder truly are endless

with or without the poetry.
