Are salesman still fishy?

Sales is such a unique talent that not many people have. When most people think of salesman their first thought is the well dressed used car guy. In most cases that's not even close. Yet “the salesman” has gotten such a bad name due to that stereo type. It’s funny to imagine the door to door salesman wanting to sell you the latest in vacuuming technology.

I just got back from a trip to Seattle and I witnessed one of the best sales tricks ever. Let me paint you the picture. We’re in down town Seattle looking like tourists. We are walking in the Pikes Market where they throw the fish. We just had to see it in person. It’s the thing “to do” when you visit Seattle. We get to the famous Pikes Fish Market and I was just standing there taking it all in. Then one of the fish moves. They had it attached to a string so they could move it in a way to grab your attention. Then one of the guys in the front starts the pitch.

He began with, “Hey guys where are you from?” and some other questions. He makes a joke, and then asks if we like smoked salmon. “Let me send you to my buddy. He has some down there. You just have to try it.” So of course we couldn’t just bail out then. Here we go to try out this fish jerky. Next thing I know we are buying some because of how nice they were. It was the best sales process I have seen in a while! The old bait and hook, get it bait and hook? Lol

It goes to show you that if believe in what your selling you can enjoy doing it. It won’t be about meeting numbers. It becomes about the interaction with the people you are selling to. The point is the day of the “used car” and “door to door” salesman mentality has become a thing of the past. It was so cool to see it first hand in the streets of Seattle.

For me sales is more the just pushing a product or service. I truly believe in what we do and the value it brings to my current and potential customers. I find sales to be a natural talent because I love the interaction and enjoy what I get out of it. There is not pressure to meet a certain number. It’s just 100% pure truthful sales. Being a talented salesman takes empathy, respect, and believing in what your offering. If you have those 3 things it’s a game changer.
