How to write blog posts that people actually read.

Let’s give the people what they really want.

Writing tips can be found all over the internet. I’ve even written a number of them. But do they really provide you the skills needed to write stories that people read, engage with, and share with their friends?

Writing things people want to read is not as difficult as you might think. Take these opening paragraphs for example, they don’t actually mean anything. Most people won’t read them. They’re just scrolling past them, looking for the bold text or bullet points.

Just include some sentences to add length to your story and appear you actually know what you’re talking about.

1. Include a list of reasons.

Lists are what people care about. Make the bullet points good. People will read them. They won’t, however, read the explanation you provide. It takes time that could be spent doing other things, like reading the next bullet point.

2. Tell people how to live their lives.

People just want a quick tip they can read and feel a sense of enlightenment. No one will read your explanations. Again, just add a few sentences that make it look like you know what you’re talking about. Even if you don’t. Because, let’s face it, you probably don’t.

3. Keep the bullet points to five or less.

Odd numbers are preferable because most people are odd. If you have to include an even number of bullets, then make one a “bonus.” This way you appear to be sharing additional information that you otherwise would have held back. You’re so generous!

4. Include links to other things you have written.

The more links you include, the more it will seem like you are smart and trustworthy. The links don’t even have to be relevant because people won’t click them. They will just see the links, ignore the sentence they’re in, and move onto the next bullet point.

5. Have a picture that attracts attention.

People won’t actually read your headline until they are attracted by the cover photo. Make it a good one. Using someone writing or typing is good. Something abstract or attractive is better. When in doubt, throw a curve ball and use an image that vaguely connects to your topic.

BONUS TIP: Ask people to engage.

When it comes down to it, no one cares what you write. But if your bullet points are good, people might actually think they learned something. Encourage them to hit the heart button or leave a response telling you how much they learned and how amazing of a person you are. Make this font bold or a blockquote so it stands out.

You now have all the tips needed to write a blog post that people will read. They probably won’t remember any of the details in five minutes, but that’s ok. You already got that bump in viewership.
