My Glen Campbell story and playlist

“…If you try a little kindness
Then you’ll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets.”

My brother came home from Vietnam (in 1969) with the first turntable we ever had in our house. But he only had two records: Elvis and Ricky Nelson. Glen Campbell was one of our first purchases, and Galveston was added to our playlist right after Garden Party.

We watched Glen’s variety show in the 70s, and my brother took me to see him at the Charlotte Coliseum sometime early in that decade. It was my first concert. Glen turned us on to a lot of music. From the blues…

To soft rock…

And opera…

Easy listening…

And folk…

He even played well with others — on the same instrument!

Like my brother, Glen was a nice guy with an open mind and often simple but powerful messages — one in particular that I think resonates so much today…

I’ll miss Glen…

Kühner Kommentar an Amerika

A frank, independent, and courageous look at my German-American heritage, history, and current events with a deep aversion to sham and pretense wherever it appears.
