On some of the Confederate history WFAE’s Charlotte Talks didn’t get to…

My local public radio station hosted a conversation about Confederate monuments yesterday which ended with the local camp commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans yelling at the brother of a Charleston church shooting victim that Black Lives Matter is a terrorist organization. Just think about that for a minute…
In a recent appearance on CNN in which — echoing one of our State Representatives from back in April — the Confederate heritage “camp commander” from Gastonia compared Abraham Lincoln to Adolf Hitler. In addition to the typical Lost Cause narrative about how the Civil War wasn’t fought primarily over slavery, he appeared to get the most animated in his appearance on Charlotte Talks when talking about war crimes committed by the Union Army (or when arguing about Black Lives Matter). But he said he was “all about” telling the full story of the war. So, in that spirit…
While his passionate defense of states rights included no mention of the failure of some Northern States to enforce the fugitive slave act, he did mention that there were also Abolitionists in the South. But he did not mention General William Mahone of Virginia…
Or any Confederate deserters…
Or “bad conduct” by Confederate forces…
Or Confederate war crimes…
And, thankfully, he also didn’t mention “Uncle William”…
Of course he did note that Jefferson Davis was a “good Christian,” but he failed to mention how Christianity was used to advance the cause of slavery…
Finally, he didn’t mention Jack Daniels — but after listening to this conversation I really wanted to drink some.
