The journey began on a Thursday morning October 6 about a couple years ago and our first time being evacuated to all the residence in our building. We rushed frantically around the apartment to gather the necessary things we may need and then take a quick shower then head it downstairs for further instructions.

10:45 AM, a group of us from our residence walked to Abercorn and 35th Street to catch the city bus in order to proceed to the Savannah Civic Center. After finally packing us on those awaiting buses we finally made our way to the Savannah Civic Center to register and board on school buses that awaits us there. Finally we were on the road in order to be out arms way of the path of Hurricane Matthew hits our shores. It seemed like 10 or more buses going down the highway like a convoy along with a police escort as we travel that long highway to our safe haven from the coming storm; Rincon, and Newington and we even stopped to a Wallmart to a grab a little something to eat. We continued to moving down the highway until reach our we just about to reach where we were going but first, they gassed up the buses and onward we go and we finally reached our home away from home until the storm clears up; Augusta, GA the city I was born.

We continued to made it’s way to our shelter area as the police escort continues to help with traffic and then our final destination the George P. Butler High School gym.

There were those from the American Red Cross to greet us as well as the principal of the school to give us a warm welcome. This was our safe place until the storm passes Savannah but in the meantime we were safe and sound and out of arms way from that storm Matthew and that’s not the end of the end of the story……..
