In the area of nutrition and diet carbs are the biggest villains these days. Low carb diets hence are the in things. Keto diet is one such diet, which has gained a lot of popularity. Lets learn how it works.

How Ketogenic Diet Works

Our body has three sources of energy.

  1. Carbohydrates: The primary source of energy for our body are carbohydrates. These carbohydrates after digestion are converted into sugars, which then provide us energy to do our daily task.
  2. Proteins: If we are not able to eat carbohydrates then our body also has the capability to convert protein into calories and provide us energy. In the extreme case, when our body is not receiving any food then our body can break down our own muscles and convert them into calories
  3. Fats: Fats are densely packed with calories. A gram of fat contains more than twice as much calories as both Carbohydrates and Fats. The fat that we consume is converted into ketones, which then provides us energy.

As the name suggest, ketogenic diet is a diet which leads to the production of ketones in our body.
