Rules of Kabaddi

  • Though the rules vary according to the style of kabaddi, some rules are common. Here are some rules of kabaddi.
  • Every team shall comprise of 12 players and out of them only 7 from each team will play at one time.
  • As kabaddi is a contact sport, the matches are played in categories like age, as well as weight category.
  • 6 officials look into each match. The officials are 1 referee, 1 scorer, 2 assistant scorers, and 2 umpires.
  • The duration of each match is 2 halves of twenty minutes including a half-time break of 5 minutes.
  • The match begins with a coin toss where the winning team decides whether it wants to have the raid or not. In another half of the kabaddi match, the team that didn’t raid begin another half with a raid.
  • The raider must take a deep breath and run into the half of the opposition to tag as many members as possible without inhaling. The player can inhale after returning to his own half.
  • The raider shall have to repeatedly chant “kabaddi kabaddi” without breaking the breath.
  • The defending team must prevent the raider from tagging them. The defending team can also score a point. If the team manages to prevent the raider from returning to his half, the defenders get a point. The team can grab the raider by his torso or limbs. The defenders must not cross the center line.
  • The teams take turns in raiding and defending.
  • After the halftime, the teams switch sides.
