The Ceasefire Between Hamas and Israel: Reflections and Lessons Learned
Yesterday marked the first day of the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, bringing a temporary halt to a devastating conflict that has persisted for over a year. During this time, I dedicated myself to understanding the complex and lengthy history of Palestine and Israel. While those of us without influence over these events can do little to change them, we can educate ourselves and adopt informed stances, however limited their impact may be. Reflecting on this tragic period, here are six key lessons I have learned.
1. Global Indifference to Genocide
One of the most harrowing realizations is how the world watches genocide unfold on their mobile and computer screens yet remains largely powerless to stop it. This is not due to a lack of awareness or empathy — many people detest such atrocities — but because of the structural and political dynamics at play. Governments and elites, even in Western democracies, often act in defiance of their populations’ sentiments, supporting genocide without accountability. This dichotomy between public opinion and state action underscores a troubling reality: humanity’s collective moral outrage does not always translate into tangible change.
