Meet the Kadena Team: Head of Product, Anagha Mercado
Gotta catch 'em all, sneakers, sci-fi and much more from our Head of Product, Anagha.
What do you enjoy about the work you do?
What I enjoy the most about my work is that it can play a small part in changing the world!
At the end of the day, I want to do work that has an impact on individuals/companies and makes a real difference. As Head of Product, I get to work with bright individuals to figure out a roadmap and then execute. I love working with my colleagues and bringing them together to achieve a common goal.
What personal projects do you pursue outside of work?
I am a total nerd when it comes to science fiction. I enjoy it because it shows where people think we can go. I loved the original Star Trek because I thought it showed an inclusive and hopeful future. I also love reading fiction because it gives me insight into other people, cultures, and experiences.
Another area of interest includes sports such as baseball, tennis, and basketball - in that order. I became a sports fan because I read the backstories to some of the athletes and I got to understand how they persevered through adversity and overcame the odds to realize their dreams.
“ It made me realize that everyone has challenges in their lives, and it’s how you approach them and what you do about them that really makes the difference.”
I started running races in the last couple of years and ran my first half marathon — The Brooklyn Half — last year. I recently sprained my ankle pretty badly, but I’m hoping to get back on track with physical therapy. My goal is to run the Brooklyn Half again this year and hopefully improve my overall course time.
In my spare time, I play Pokémon Go for fun. It’s been very interesting playing this game as a product manager because I see the decisions that Niantic has made about releasing features, rewarding serious players, and keeping the momentum going. I particularly like this game because you see all types of people playing it — young and old, parents and their children, men and women! My husband and I play together and we’ve made a lot of new friends through this game.
Lastly but not least, I’m a sneakerhead! I started getting into sneakers about five years ago. I like how they add a splash of style to your outfit. Right now, I have a few Jordans and Air Force 1s that I’ve been wearing. My favorite sneaker color combination is black and red; I think it’s very classy.
What’s the biggest misconception about blockchain?
Some people think that Bitcoin is blockchain. A lot of people still think they are one and the same, but I think that perception is slowly changing. I think the coin and the possibility of making money is what usually attracts people. Hopefully, once they are in the space, they realize the possibilities of blockchain and how it can revolutionize the world.
What is one of your favorite use cases for blockchain?
Use cases are really only limited by imagination. My favorite use case is one that gives each individual access to their information and the ability to give other parties access to it, as needed. For example, when I sprained my ankle, I had to run around and get X-rays and MRIs from one doctor to another. How great would it have been if this information was put on the blockchain by one doctor and then I could just give other doctors access to it?
If the blockchain really is as revolutionary as the web, what will it mean for everyday consumers in a decade or two?
I hope that it means that individuals own their personal data and that the power will be in each person’s hands, not in the hands of corporations. I see transaction costs disappearing and data being able to get verified by regulators or auditors automatically. I also see different types of jobs and industries emerging to support this new way of doing business.
