Dubai is often seen as a land of opportunity, attracting professionals from around the globe with its promise of good salaries, tax-free income, high-quality living, and a cosmopolitan lifestyle. However, securing a job in this competitive market requires more than filling out application forms and sending resumes.

As someone who has spent over two decades navigating Dubai's professional landscape, I strongly recommend that job applicants follow these five crucial rules to secure a job in this competitive market.

1. Do What You Love Doing

One of the most important pieces of advice I can give is to pursue a career that you are genuinely passionate about. We often hear that we should follow our hearts, which holds true for our careers.

I initially pursued a master’s degree in Information Technology back in the days when the Internet and PC fever were everywhere (2000). Still, I soon realized that programming and system administration were not my true calling. I didn’t enjoy them, and it became clear that continuing that path wouldn’t lead to a fulfilling career.

Therefore, soon after starting my career, I decided to pursue an MBA in Human Resource Management and shift my focus to HR, a field that resonated with my interests and strengths. This transition wasn’t easy, but I excelled because I loved my work.

When you genuinely enjoy your work, you naturally put in more effort, and this passion is reflected in the quality of what you produce. Today, my work in HR is recognized and deeply appreciated, and I take pride in what I do daily. The key takeaway is to Do what you love, and success will follow.

2. Experience the Work First

Before you consider applying for jobs in Dubai, gaining relevant experience in your home country is crucial. If you haven’t established yourself in your local market, you may struggle to succeed in Dubai. Employers here look for candidates who can bring immediate value to the company, and that value often comes from prior experience.

When my HR colleagues and I receive CVs, we look for candidates whose experience matches the job description. In Dubai, degrees and qualifications are necessary but won’t get you far without practical, hands-on experience.

If you’re struggling to find work in your home country, consider gaining experience, even if it’s through internships or volunteer work. Your success in Dubai depends on the foundation you build at home.

3. Map the Market and Apply

Understanding the market you’re entering is critical. Before you start applying for jobs, take the time to map out the job market in Dubai. Use platforms like LinkedIn and other online job boards to research companies, job openings, and industry trends. This will help you identify where your skills and experience are most needed.

When applying, tailor your CV to match the job description closely. A generic CV won’t stand out, but one that highlights your relevant experience and skills will. Do not copy and paste; remain genuine. Mapping the market and applying strategically increase your chances of landing a job.

4. Communicate Better

Poor communication is a common mistake I repeatedly see from job seekers, especially those applying from outside the UAE, especially where English is not the spoken language. Sending a CV with a message like “do the needful” or “CV attached” will not get you noticed.

Take the time to craft a well-written, professional message when reaching out to potential employers. If you’re unsure how to write it, use tools like ChatGPT to help draft your messages. Also, forget the Cover Letters. We dont read those anymore!

Remember, your communication is often your first impression on a potential employer. Improve your communication, and you’ll improve your chances of getting hired.

5. Never Hesitate to Call

Persistence is another vital component of a successful job search in Dubai. Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and call potential employers. Yes, it can be uncomfortable, but this direct approach can set you apart from other candidates who rely solely on sending emails or messages. If the job is about selling or marketing or requires follow-ups, you will have already made your mark on the company with your persistence.

I’ve encountered many candidates who were hired simply because they were persistent. They followed up so much that we couldn’t ignore them, and in the end, their determination paid off. Don’t hesitate to make that cold call — it could be the difference between getting the job or not.

Conclusion

Dubai’s job market is unique, characterized by a diverse workforce and high expectations from employers. Securing a job in Dubai is challenging but achievable if you follow these simple rules. Do what you love, gain relevant experience, map the market, communicate effectively, and never hesitate to call.
