If you build a website, they will come. Then what?

“Hey, you’re also part of Kaiho Pasu right? I saw your website the other day. I was looking for some information but couldn’t find it. Can you help me now?”

I received this message on WhatsApp on a Sunday morning. I was super excited! Someone had gone to the website and actually made the effort to contact me to find out more!

It also got me thinking. Here we have one person who couldn’t find something they were looking for on our website. What if more people come to our website, look for something but just…leave?

No! That’s a nightmare! We can’t let that happen.

I got out of bed and started to look for messaging apps

Today, our website is live with Drift, a new age messaging app for Sales & Marketing. Being a huge fan of David Cancel and his podcast Seeking Wisdom, Drift was a natural choice for me. Besides, it was Drift who sowed the thought into my head that 5 minutes is the acceptable time frame to get back to a lead (You should read this blog of theirs).

Drift solves the problem of companies engaging with their leads and pushing them through the funnel to convert them to revenue. We aren’t looking for any revenue from our website visitors but that is no reason to ignore them.

Why did we implement Drift?

We are a fast growing social entrepreneurship. It’s been a while since we launched our website. Even though we haven’t gone bonkers in sharing our website all over the place, we have been gaining some traction through word of mouth.

The awesome looking website was built by our amazing Team Nexus. Keeping true to KP’s value of building things from scratch, Varsha and Raji built the website from scratch by learning the skills required over a period of time.

The website looks great today with a lot of information! We direct almost everyone we meet to the website and share the website link on all our social media profiles. But what happens after someone visits the website?

Today, the website experience for someone coming in looks like this:

Of course, we could have put a Contact Us form for them to fill out but who fills forms in this day and age?

With Drift, it looks like this.

Whenever someone comes on the website, the chat bubble pops up letting people know that they can talk to me. We chose to use my name and face as we felt people would rather want to talk to people than an avatar.

Whenever someone messages on the chat bubble, I instantly get notified through the Drift mobile app enabling me to converse with the website visitor.

Currently, we’re on the free version of Drift that means you’ll only get to see my face when you’re on our website. If the engagement increases, we could potentially add more people to man the fort.

“So what if people come to your website and leave? If they’re interested, wouldn’t they make an effort”

The reality is that everyone’s busy. With so many things happening around us, things automatically go down the priority bucket. We really want to make it easy for the community to engage with us and learn more about what we’re doing. If that means spending some time to answer their questions through a messaging app, then so be it!

At this stage of the organisation, it is important to have as many conversations as possible (online and offline).

We strongly believe in the power of the community and we’re looking to build networks outside our 2nd & 3rd degree connections. We truly want to build a global community and that means we can’t afford to miss a single conversation with anyone who’s interested enough to visit our website.
