Madame Gandhi’s EP ‘Voices’ Projects In 3D Femininity

Madame Gandhi’s EP “Voices” was released this week and features five tracks, including the single “Her.” The band worked with other femme artists, including Merril Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, to produce the EP.

Madame Gandhi’s style focuses on vocals and heavy drums. “Voices” arcs from the upbeat “Yellow Sea” down to the meditative, trance-like “The Future is Female.” In the middle, “Gandhi Blues” slows everything down with a soulful and rhythmic look at front-woman Kiran Gandhi’s emotional state. This collection is self-aware and politically charged.

For each song, front-woman Kiran Gandhi’s vocals play an integral part. She goes from singing, to rapping, to conversation. Her message is a political one and she shows us the political is never separate from the personal. She speaks directly and passionately to her audience without being didactic. “Her,” for example, is a direct effort to elect Hillary Clinton on November 8th.

“I am doing all I can as an artist to get everyone out to vote to get Hillary elected,” Gandhi said over email.

Madame Gandhi will be performing in major battleground states in the run-up to the election. This week they’ll be at the Rock the Vote Concert in Nevada, alongside Vic Mensa and Wale. Gandhi will also be speaking at the Women Against Pence rally in Indiana on November 2.
