According to the Attention Index measuring a combination of reader interest, publisher reach and promotion the top story in December was the list of forbidden words issued to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While The Washington Post led all publishers on Facebook with 1.7M engagements for their coverage of the story it was CNN’s reach strength (29M Facebook followers and high Alexa ranking) that gave their coverage the edge overall.

A close second was CNN’s coverage of Trump’s judicial nominee struggling to answer questions during his nomination hearing.

The fastest-moving story on Facebook in December was The New York Times’ coverage of Doug Jones election victory in Alabama on the 12th of December. The story peaked at 8,800 engagements per minute at one point, finishing at over 1M engagements in total, catapulting the story into one of the top stories of 2017 overall.

The longest story was Buzzfeed’s investigation “Revealed: The Secrets Of One Of The World’s Dirtiest Banks And Its Powerful Western Protectors”. The 11,000-word piece was published on the 13th by Tom Warren, Investigations Correspondent and Alex Campbell, Deputy UK Investigations Editor.
