Meet the Kambrian — Rudo

Our next Meet the Kambrian introduces you to Rudo. Our Slovakian-born, Tallinn-residing account manager extraordinaire. Read on to learn why he’s the one to call when you need a sealed package opened and how he had a brief but fiery stint in show business.

Where are you from?

I am from the western part of Slovakia, around Trencin, and currently live in Tallinn, Estonia.

What’s your role at Kambr?

Account Manager for the EMEA region.

What was your path to Kambr?

This is a really interesting question! When I look back, I’d say that every step in my career led to Kambr in some way, and being here is just some natural culmination of these steps.

This journey started with low-cost carriers, some of the same ones where other Kambrians have worked, and later, I gained experience in revenue management in various business areas — the hotel industry, full-service network carriers and air cargo.

Most of them were using different systems and methods within revenue management, which gives a great overview of tools and approaches available. I also had a chance to see how an RM system is being developed from the vendor perspective, so with this combination of skills, Kambr is the place to be.

What’s something you want your colleagues to know about you?

As much as I try, I’m not a morning person. My brain just does not start to work right after opening eyes, but on the plus side, it keeps going strong when those early birds are on their last breath 😊

What keeps you busy outside of work?

Being outdoors in the fresh air is a great balance to the time spent behind the computer screen — whether it is hiking, cycling, or even just going for a longer walk.

What’s your superpower?

Not sure I possess anything like that, so I rather spend time on improving my “regular powers.” For example, I might feel I have a superpower to cook something special, but it then might take another superpower to be able to eat it 😛

But speaking of food, one super talent comes to mind actually — opening sealed packaging. Whether it is sliced cheese or ham or anything else, I always manage to end up with that one small bit of plastic corner or foil cover in one hand and an unopened package in the other….

What makes you nervous?

The possibility of missing a flight, train or just being late (because of some unexpected traffic jam or similar thing). To prevent this, I like to leave early with solid time reserve, or maybe I just want to hear “sit, you still have plenty time” rather than “you should REALLY be going now”.

What are you proud of?

I taught our dog to bring the ball rather than just chew it or run away with it… I can say, it took a lot of balls 😊

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

There are so many to choose from, still one worth coming back to is “Reach for the stars — you might not quite get there, but you will not end up with handful of mud either.”

Another one comes to mind, which I received recently: “Don’t close the door to a good opportunity, as there is already enough other people doing this for you.”

What’s one thing you love to do?

Cycling — or maybe better word to use would be riding a bike, as that one does not have that hint of competition.

Finding new places or just riding along the known paths seeing the change in nature or in season…and letting the mind drift off so for a while one does not even realize he’s pedaling, that is a great feeling.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Astronaut (or cosmonaut). Second option was a garbage man — standing on that small step at the back of a moving truck, casually holding on with only one hand …how cool is that ?!?!

What’s the most interesting (or unusual) job you’ve had?

As a students I had a lot of seasonal or part-time jobs — from construction to planting trees or farming broccoli, but one that was really special was an “assistant fireman” in the movie production studios.

Most of the time it was just making sure nobody smokes inside or I had to stand with a handheld fire extinguisher next to some special-effects device producing sparks…(just in case), so not a lot of true firefighting action — but it was great to see how movies are made and here and there meet someone you know from the cinema screen.

What’s your favorite/dream destination to fly to?

New Zealand! I hope to one day visit as it looks amazing!

What’s the airport you’ve been to the most?

Must be Helsinki, which until recently was my home airport. And even if I did not make it to the famous flight 666 on Friday 13th, it still is a special feeling to be on the “flight to HEL” 😊

What’s your favorite aviation related film?

I cannot really recall any recent ones. What comes to mind is Tmavomodry svet (English title: Dark Blue World), a Czech movie about pilots from Czechoslovakia flying for Great Britain during the WWII….

But for a good laugh, planes from early aviation era, and amazingly funny display of national stereotypes, I cannot recommend enough Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines.

Window seat or aisle seat?

Window whenever possible, looking out is just the best IFE there is. I have been lucky enough to make some flights on cockpit jump-seat, and for great views — that is the window to choose 😊

Do you have any funny or weird flight stories?

Maybe not funny, but still a moment that puts a smile on my face happened a few years back. Right after the safety briefing onboard, a crew member came by asking if I’m a first time flyer.

I answered no, been working for airlines and flying for years and I got a surprising reply: “Ah, my mistake, I thought this is your first flight as you were the only one paying attention.”
