As part of the VietAI Summit 2019, Hoa Nguyen gave a presentation about an AI-Assisted Diagnosis System in Ophthalmology, which was developed due to current challenges faced by ophthalmologists, nurses, and patients.

The first challenge in diagnosis is asking the right questions. Unfortunately, young doctors often lack experience and aren’t prepared for the patient interview. Second, nurses are often too busy to properly record medical information in Electronic Medical Records (EMRs). As a result, they probably miss a lot of important information about patients. Third, many patients spend too much time waiting for an examination. Despite the fact that they are asked to fill in the medical forms while waiting, those forms may have fields irrelevant to their condition.

In order to address the problems listed above, Hoa Nguyen’s team developed an artificial intelligence-based solution to provide better medical experience to ophthalmic patients.

The image shown below is our eyes, we can see some bleeding, some hard exudates, etc.

The first solution is to build a knowledge base that includes information from textbooks developed by senior doctors to address the challenges highlighted above. The next phase is to build an auto-interviewing system, which will automatically interview patients while they wait, asking questions that are relevant to their condition. And the final phase is to establish a segmentation model in order to help junior doctors improve their image reading skills.

The exciting news is that a demo of this new AI-based system is now available. The model can show the probability and possibility of eye diseases, which will better help doctors identify problems and help patients recover early. This AI detection system can distinguish abnormal situations in patient images by color and also help doctors build a complete patient portrait. By using the database, they will be able to create subtypes of diseases, add observations about the disease, and possibly identify the disease based on these observations.
