KameraKakis is a group of NUS students who aim to tap on photography to address youth recidivism rates. We strive to inspire and impart photography skills to the boys from Singapore Boys Home (SBH).

There are a total of 3 phases in our approach — Training, Engagement and Publicity Phase. These phases are carefully designed to ensure that youth-volunteers who have joined our program can get the best out of it — in facilitating both positive youth development and community development. 👍🏻💯

In the first training phase, youth-volunteers will undergo fun and interactive training sessions to get familiarised with the Singapore Boys Home and how to better communicate with at-risk youth. They will also have opportunities to hone their photography skills by learning new photography styles! 📸

In the Engagement Phase, youth-volunteers will head down to the Singapore Boys Home and teach the boys some basic photography skills. Through these sessions, youth-volunteers will get to bond with their Kakis while sharing your passion for photography with them! At the end of this phase, we will go on themed photo walks together to capture meaningful shots that reflect the Boys’ life stories.

For an example of the lesson plan curated by the youth students after the training phase, please click here.

In the Publicity Phase, students and their Kakis will curate their photosets and prepare for the final exhibitions. The photosets will be showcased in a physical exhibition as well as on our online platform! Through this phase, we hope to share the Boys’ stories with the wider public and address certain stigmas against at-risk youths. This can tackle the re-integration issues many of these boys face. 🤜🏼🤛🏽

Feel free to check out our online exhibition here to see the photographs that the Boys have taken! 😊
