What We’re Up to in 2019

Early last year, the Kapor Center released our landmark framework, the Leaky Tech Pipeline. In planning for our 2019 activities, we used the four focus areas of the pipeline to organize our work across our staff teams - Prek-12, Postsecondary Ed, Workforce , and Entrepreneurship & VC. (We even added a fifth, Ecosystem, to capture the systemic "sum" of the other areas.)

This was a new approach for us, more interdisciplinary and inclusive than ever before, bringing together colleagues from SMASH, Community Engagement, Research, Communications, and Kapor Capital to align, plan, and implement across our various programs. This way, we can better dovetail with and leverage each other’s work, share metrics and measurements of our progress, and run leaner initiatives and interventions that enable us to learn and iterate as we go.

We strive to have a bigger overall positive impact through strengthening high school computer science education, better connecting job readiness and placement, making workplace tech inclusion practices more rigorous, and expanding entrepreneurship opportunities - all with a central focus building economic opportunities for Black and Latinx communities.

We have a few major moves up our sleeves and can’t wait to share them with you when the time is right. Stay tuned!

Our 2019 Shared Goals

  • Increase the participation and success of underrepresented students in AP CS to ensure their preparation for computing pathways in college and career.
  • Increase the number of underrepresented people of color, particularly womxn, who enter, persist, and complete computing degrees and are prepared for tech(nical) careers.
  • Increase the number of underrepresented people of color, particularly womxn, who enter, persist, and advance in the tech workforce.
  • Increase the number of underrepresented founders and investors who create, finance, and exit impact tech companies.
  • Create systemic change to improve economic development through inclusive tech ecosystems.
