While many industries are struggling, digital media is alive and well. While sheltering at home and recovering from the shutdowns, people are making more images, videos, audio tracks, and memes than they ever have before.

Some have predicted that this trend will stop as the economy opens up. However, I believe and predict that media entrepreneurship will continue to thrive in 2020. Here are 7 reasons why:

  1. Slow economy means less capital to put into paid advertising and more focus on organic channels like Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Looking to stay frugal, small businesses will learn how to make media themselves in-house instead of hiring an expensive agency.
  2. Social distance means more screen time and time at home, which means social media is more important now than it was in 2019.
  3. A global crisis has created global memes and trends. The whole world is laughing about bad haircuts and watching the same news. Coronavirus memes and mask memes are trending in every single country.
  4. TikTok has surged in popularity. TikTok challenges give people an outlet who are bored at home and give creators a new space to express themselves.
  5. Unemployment means that more people will be creating content as a hobby or to make money while looking for another job. People who have recently lost their jobs will start new YouTube channels, podcasts, newsletters, and other media channels to bring in income.
  6. Remote communication. Teams, coworkers, families, and friends are communicating more through remote technologies like Zoom and group chats instead of in person. Now, you say good morning with a meme instead of a smile.
  7. Virtual events will drive digital marketing and internet behavior. Instead of conferences, concerts, sports games, or other offline events, people will turn to online streaming platforms and media for entertainment. Musicians will create musical collages, and visual artists will make more video representation of their work.
