In 2017, the International Olympic Committee recognized e-sports as an official sport and the Asian Games decided to put Esports into the official competition.
For the past few years, with increasing technological developments and internet accessibility, over 70% of Vietnam’s population has access to the Internet, more than 51 million 3G and 4G subscribers — 2018. E-sports have become a major cash cow in the entertainment industry. The latest statistics of Appota’s Vietnam E-sports Guidebook 2019 (VEG) show that in 2018 there were more than 15 million e-sports gamers. This number has risen to 26 million out of a total of 32.8 million video gamers in 2019.
Vietnam Esports TV (VETV) and other small groups that broadcast professional matches live also gradually improve the quality of their products and services with support from industry giants like Twitch or YouTube Gaming. The Vietnamese gaming communities are gaining traction on Youtube and Facebook. The fact that e-sports gamers can compete in schools or even local internet cafés provide an amazing ecosystem for a rapidly thriving e-sports industry.
The local e-sports market is dominated by a Vietnamese game portal “Garena”, also the biggest Southeast Asian game portal. Garena entered the market in 2009 with games like League of Legends (2012), FIFA Online 3 (2013), Arena of Valor (2016), and Blade & Soul (2017). This time KardiaChain is organizing a prediction game of the “Arena of Valor” tournament published by Garena.

Tournaments and Vietnamese teams’ achievements
The Vietnamese team won a bronze medal at the 18th Asian Games Jakarta Palembang 2018 in the games Arena of Valor, Pro Evolution Soccer, and Clash Royale, which won the third place in the Arena of Valor International Championship 2018, while receiving the $20,000 second prize at the PUBG SEA Championship 2018.
Besides, Vietnam has been the destination for international e-sports events such as the play-in and group stage of the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational 2019 by Riot Games and the Arena of Valor World Cup.
2. A billion-dollar industry
According to Appota eSports’ Vietnam eSports Guidebook 2019 stated a dramatic increase in the total value of e-sport tournament prize pools in Vietnam during 2015–2018, reaching up to $787,000 in 2018 from $685,000 in 2017 and $390,000 in 2016. In early 2018, Esports tournaments around the country offered prizes of up to VND 8 billion ($350,000), attracting millions of viewers and a significant amount of corporate sponsorship. The impressive growth in prize pools is largely due to the increased size of the audience, which attracts brands to sponsor tournaments. This allows professional players to earn a handy income: Popular streamers of League of Legends, DOTA 2 have had successful years of earning tens of thousands of dollars a month from streaming.
In Newzoo’s ranking, the country was gaining over $365 million of revenue in 2018, climbing from 35th to 28th of the world’s largest gaming markets. This is a clear indicator of how much money brands and game publishers are willing to invest into Vietnam’s e-sports economy.
The Vietnamese e-sports “fertile” market is lucrative for all parties involved when it reaches a fast pace of growth. Revenue model has been a great potential in the local e-sports, contributed by various fields from fans and brands through different forms such as organizing, in-game purchases, goods, ticket sales, sponsorships, and advertising and broadcasting fees.
