💯 STORY CHALLENGE

A Nice Drive Upriver

And hope for more bear encounters. (97)

Haines, AK. Author photo

We walk around the small town of Haines, Alaska, asking the usual questions. Everyone suggests going up the river to see the brown bears. The man at the visitor’s center gives us the number of a local tour guide.

Anthony picks us up at our hotel with his 11-year-old daughter, Briley, riding shotgun. On the drive up along the Chilikoot River, they regale us with tales of bear sightings.

The river is big and beautiful, as is the glacier-fed lake above it. We stop at three spots, including a weir bridge where salmon are counted.

But we see no bears.
