Shutesbury’s New Public Library Construction has Begun; So Reports the Springfield Daily Republican Newspaper on September 24, 1902(Day 68)

Now it’s time to replace the tiny cottage with a 21st century library

Imagine the excitement when work began on the new Shutesbury library! Roswell Field Putnam was the foremost residential architect in the Amherst Northampton area in the late 19th century. From 1893-1897, he partnered with architect Lewis D. Bayley from Kentucky and they designed many public building including the Northampton Masonic block, South Deerfield Grand Army Building, Meekins library in Williamsburg and the North Amherst library.

D.A. Sullivan (now D.A. Sullivan and Sons Inc), was established in 1897, and today it typically manages about fifteen projects a year. The firm has built many public buildings including the Worcester, Leicester, Grafton, Hadley and South Hadley public libraries, as well as the new Greenfield public Library currently under construction.
