Human resource activities do not directly affect the production process in an organisation, but they are necessary to ensure smooth functioning of the workforce. Keeping track of team performance, appraising, and rewarding them is a full-time job and most large companies have dedicated HR teams to do the same. Small businesses tend to avoid these processes that can significantly improve the performance of their teams. The resource constraints here are understandable, but what if someone tells you that you can get all of these things done just by using a small but smart piece of software?

Thousands of business teams have ditched emails for Slack, probably the most famous of modern chat-based platforms for team collaboration. Various bots, automated scripts that, can be plugged in to enrich the experience. Karmabot is one of such solutions, a secret ingredient to a happy team recipe.

Karmabot is not a mere example of technical wizardry but a solution born out of necessity. It was originally a chatbot made to manage the in-house team.

As a business owner, I see Karmabot as a very useful tool for tracking performance, handling promotions, assigning actual monetary rewards and bonuses, deciding on salary appraisals. The system is transparent and fair

Along with Stas Kulesh, we came up with the idea of a chatbot that would handle Reddit-like karma points when they were managing a remote team of 30 at Sliday, an Auckland-based software development studio (est. 2009).

For those who want to streamline and automate their business processes and fully utilise Slack environment, it is an easy way to set goals, track performance and reward excellence.

“Karma” in this context, of course, means not just tasks being accomplished, or targets achieved for the organisation. Anyone can request karma for any other member of the team. It could be something imperative like delivering a milestone early or just a nicety like ‘being awesome and all’. The moderators can approve or decline karma to any team member based on his discretion. Karmabot is flexible; you can set your own ‘mantra’ to suggest karma bonuses and penalties for your staff in particular.

Organisations like Twitter, VMWare, Uncommongoods, and other 1050+ companies are using Karmabot already.
