On August 13, 2023 at 11am, NFT KARTEL hosted AMA with Wreck League and NFT KARTEL. It was the first AMA with Wreck League in Korea, and despite it being a Sunday morning, we had about 130 participants.

Date : August 13, 2023 at 11:00 AM KST

Attendees : Taehoon Kim, CEO of nWay / Sangjin Hyun, Head of nWay Korea / Jaesuk Kim, CEO of Planetarium Labs / Rusyeng, NFT KARTEL

Q — Tell us about nWay!

A — nWay is a San Francisco-based game company. Our first game was “Chrono Blade” and in 2015, we also partnered with Netmarble to release a game. And our focus on real-time PVP, “Power Rangers: Legacy Wars,” which has been around for six years and has been downloaded more than 90 million times.

Q — What sets Wreck League apart from other games made by nWay?

A- There are three main differences.

The first is our collaboration with Yuga Labs. We worked with the team at Yuga Labs, and we even licensed their main characters to participate in our story.

The second is that it’s the first real-time fighting game to be built on Web3 technology. We think Web3 is inherently competitive, and people are looking to maximize their post-Mint value by leveraging their assets, skills, etc. We think this is a great fit for real-time fighting action.

The third thing is that you’re not choosing a developer-designed fighter, you’re choosing a player-designed fighter. In Wreck League, you’ll be able to showcase different strategies based on how you put your mechs together. It’s like racing with a car you built, which I think is very novel by Web2 standards.

Q — Tell about your background in developing Wreck League in Web3.

A — nWay has been developing online games for a long time. What we paid attention to while thinking about the ‘NEXT Game’ was the evolution of the game. Taking the Korean market as an example, online games have changed from PC to mobile, and BM models from flat-rate to freemium and gacha. However, the part where the community and developers create and share value together has been relatively slow to develop.

We were convinced that the combination of Web3 and blockchain could solve this problem, and that community and developer collaboration could be a possibility for the ‘NEXT game’, so we invested a lot of resources and tried to realize our ideas and values into Wreck league.

Q — Why did you choose the Yuga Labs IP?

A — Our parent company is the Animoca brands, and we met the founders of Yuga Labs through the Animoca brands. They were interested in mechs, real-time fighting games. At the same time, nWay was launching a bunch of fighting games, and we thought, why don’t we develop a fighting game that’s not tied to one IP, that’s more of a platform? It was a good alignment of interests. Season 1 is Yuga Labs, and we’re going to do Season 2, Season 3, and we’re going to connect with a new IP each time.

We’re interested in the community power of the Yuga Labs NFTs, we’re interested in the feedback from the holders, we’re interested in the scale of the economy. We’re also hoping that they’ll become a kind of esports sponsor.

Q — How does Wreck League continue to attract players and strengthen its community?

A — Wreck League has two versions, Web3 and Web2. The Web3 version will be an on-chain esport where you build a Mech with your own NFTs and compete against a variety of players, and holders of good Mechs will be able to team up with skilled players to share in the profits. As a special reward, you’ll be able to get things like 1/1 NFTs, which will “own the tournament” and get a share of the profits from the tournament.

The Web2 version will be a free-to-play game targeted at casual gamers, with no mech ownership required, and will be released in the first half of next year. A “store” within the Web2 version will feature copies of Mechs created in the Web3 version. When Web2 users purchase a Mech from the store, we want to give a portion of the revenue generated to the original Mech’s owner.

We are also considering onboarding new Web3 and Web2 users through seasonal IP collaborations.

Q — How do you plan to solve the transaction cost problem of blockchain?

A — I think it’s a problem that layer 1 and layer 2 are struggling with right now. Considering the blockchain that preserves the most decentralized value, provides users with stable assets, and has a large community, we’re building on the Ethereum (ETH) chain.

However, Ethereum has a high gas fee, especially since we need combinations, and we may need more transactions, so Wreck League is focused on completing the Mech not only through transactions, but also through asset sharing through eSports and community. Of course, we’re also open to L2.

Q — Could the Wreck League universe be integrated with the Otherside universe in the future?

A — We’re open to the idea of connecting with Otherside, HV-MTL, etc. We’ve also spoken with the Yuga Labs team, but there are no definite plans yet, so we hope you understand that we can’t give a definitive answer.

Q — Are there any plans to build an event mechs with famous ip?

A — There are already some high-profile or Hollywood IPs that we’re interested in. I think there’s a good chance that we’ll see some famous IPs that you all recognize, not just in events, but in upcoming seasons.

Q — Is there a way for people who don’t have Yuga Labs NFTs to keep up with Yuga Labs Mech holders?

A — It’s true that there are bonuses for minting and Founders Mechs when there are Yuga Labs NFTs. But even with those benefits, we don’t think Founders Mechs will create a gap — in-game wins will be competitive, and Mech combinations that allow you to create your own combos will be meaningful. We’re going to create a game that is fully playable even without Yuga Labs NFTs, and we think you’ll enjoy it that way.

Q — Are you planning to introduce warm wallets or scholarship?

A — We do have plans for support. It’s an update that we’re taking very seriously. If you link your wallet to the nWay Play platform that we’re launching, you’ll be able to load your mechs in-game when you go to nWay Play from within Wreck league.

We believe that guilds and esports systems are very important, so we will continue to develop and support scholarship as well.

Q — What are your thoughts on the oversupply of NFTs and assets causing the price of NFTs to fall?

A — There is a problem if the supply continues to grow. We are thinking of two main solutions. The first is a special mode for tournaments. It’s a deathmatch where players play against each other, and the winner can take away the other player’s part NFTs. The second is a burn model where you can mix and match different parts to upgrade them. We want to focus on the value that players get from researching and investing in their mechs, rather than the value that is created by simply buying and selling.

Q — With Yuga Labs holders getting a head start, is there any reason for new users to buy NFTs?

A — Yuga Labs holders can claim the Founders Mech. However, this Mech cannot be ‘disassembled’ into NFT parts, cannot be ‘upgraded’, and has a ‘lock-up’ that requires 3 game wins before it can be traded.

In addition, Founders Mechs will be divided into randomly assembled and 1/1 set assembled Mechs. Still, since Wreck League is all about customized skills, Mechs that fit the gameplay may be more valuable than these. Also, Mechs that are built with paid NFT parts will benefit from future minting.

Q — Will there be different modes to earn money in Wreck League, such as PVE and PVP?

A — The game will have a Web3 version and a Web2 version. The actual execution will be different: Web3 will focus on esports modes, while Web2 will be launched on the app store and will be a normal free-to-play (F2P) PvP action game. Instead, we’ve designed a system where Web3 users can own their own mechs and distribute copies to the Web2 app store, and when Web2 users buy those mechs, the revenue is shared with the owner.

Q — There are so many different combinations, it seems like there could be balance issues.

A — This is something that nWay will need to work on as much as possible. It’s up to Web3 users to create the most efficient combinations, but nWay’s designers will also have to think about it. No matter how good the parts NFTs are, we will make the game so that there is a demand for them based on combination research.

Our engineers have calculated that there are 15 trillion possible combinations, so I think the community and users will be able to make new discoveries. I think they will be able to find combinations that we don’t know about.

Q — Are there any benefits to the Day 0 OGs in the Wreck League discord?

A — I’m surprised that people seem to be more interested than I thought. I don’t know that we have any specific benefits planned, but the community team is listening to feedback, which means that if there are any events planned in the future, we’ll be able to share them. For now, there are no benefits, but we’re not going to say there won’t be in the future.

Q — Finally, tell us about your experience at the AMA!

A — I think it was a great time because we haven’t had a lot of opportunities to share information with the Korean community. We’re headquartered in San Francisco, but we also have a Korean office, so we’ll continue to support the Korean community. We’re looking forward to having an offline gathering with Korean users in the future if there are any opportunities in Korea. Thank you!
