Let’s Talk About AI

Many of us are probably aware of Chat GPT by now, an artificial-intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched in November 2022. It is built on top of OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 families of large language models and has been fine-tuned using both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques (Wikipedia).

Chat GPT is new, but it is taking the digital world by storm. While there is still little information, studies, and statistics on Chat GPT, it is very popular in the media today.

Many people find negatives and positives to Chat GPT, but as it continues to evolve, it begs the question: is AI more harmful than helpful?

According to the Open AI website, Chapt GPT interacts in a conversational way. The dialogue format makes it possible for Chat GPT to answer follow up questions in seconds.

In my Applied Social Media course, my professor had almost an entire class period about AI and Chat GPT. He encouraged the class to test it out. For that class, we are required to create a podcast — my groups podcast is all about the influencer world (give it a listen please!) One of our course requirements was to create social media pages for the podcast, so I figured it was a perfect opportunity to use Chat GPT to help me generate a caption.

I asked Chat GPT “Write me a caption about influencer marketing”, and here is what it came up with:

Instagram: @insightsninfluencers

It even included some of the hashtags, too. As we can see, Chat GPT works in wonderful ways, and can save much time when it comes to jobs or work in a social media field. Where it begins to get controversial is that it can also save much time when it comes to writing papers, mostly in an academic setting as students would probably find it most beneficial.

Since Chat GPT is so new, most schools likely do not have a way to verify if Chat GPT was being used to assist in papers or homework. Although, I am sure a verification system for it is currently in the works.

Another fascinating feature AI has is generating voice’s and photos. Just today, I saw a Tik Tok video about how AI generates photos of families from different countries — and it blew my mind.

The harms of AI I have more recently seen are voice copies using AI. With the technology AI carries, people can now use the voice of any person and make that specific voice say whatever they want. This can be dangerous because it can seriously harm somebody’s reputation. Another thing I have seen on Tik Tok is scammers starting to use voice AI to scam family members out of money. This is done by using the voice of a person and calling family members, claiming they are in serious trouble and need money, and it is believable because the voice replica is the exact same.

While AI is fascinating, helpful, and useful, there are also some negatives that we should definitely become aware of us AI continues to evolve.
