Every journey brings with it a new challenge, a new opportunity for us to showcase what we are made of, our true mettle.

The impact this thing might have on you can only be understood when you are aware of your current potential and when you can envision how the transformation might look like after every phase of this new endeavor.

It’s our nature to want and desire things, especially when we know it’s gonna be something more tangible, we want it that much more quicker and that’s where the catch is.

You quickly want things to change but all transformations require time, even when you don’t explicitly think of something in terms of how it would transform you, every change, every new challenge in a way is transformative and it will make you stronger, better and that’s why desiring just for the end result shouldn’t be the goal, rather the stepping stones that lead to the destinations should be.

Reaching the activation potential — Energy Barrier

Bohr model, where an electron jumps between orbits

All (most of us) would be familiar with the energy levels of electrons and how the transitions happen there, with that analogy…

…at the beginning, of a new job or in a new place, we have a tendency to give in and succumb to pressure but that is only because of the fact that we have not been able to do something that makes us more confident.

Although we’ve invested the time and energy and we feel the breakthrough is about to happen, only we don’t need to give up just before the threshold is crossed.

Sometimes at a new job you have the desire to just avoid things and situations because we don’t want to sound like a fool as being a new comer we don’t have much clarity and there are knowledge gaps, this can spike a feeling of just moving on (well also because we can) and save face from the embarrassment, but we can’t keep moving on every time right?

The Secret

I come across situations like these fairly often, and when I think of what can be done, more or less every time I find myself contemplating the below mentioned framework —

  1. Accept — we have to make peace at some point and embrace the fact that we have to accept what we have, where the gaps are and what are our strengths.
  2. Learn — growth is impossible if you are unwilling to learn, that’s the essence of having a growth mindset, observing people who are already doing well, doing the ground work to research what are good resources to upskill, improve upon something.
  3. Adapt —being flexible is another ingredient that often gets neglecting when it comes to embracing a change. For some reason, I feel the cancel culture has allowed people to develop a false understanding of self an others, which can pave a way to a disastrous outcome — of disagreement all the time. Be flexible to adapt with changing time, people or situation.
  4. Implement — every small step in this journey needs to have a tangible outcome, that’s the only way you measure progress, so spend time making/ doing something with whatever you have learnt, however small.
  5. Practice — repetition! repetition! repetition! This never gets old. Keep doing it, consolidate.

More than the order or intensity with which you do anything, following a process is the key, being consistent in the way you do things will keep you motivated to give it a shot — at this journey transforming you.

Wait.. Is this Transferable?

I know we have tackled this thing from only a professional, career oriented angle, but the fundamentals are the same in every “game” (yes, I come from the ground and I see everything as a sport/ game).

The elements you deal with, in any aspect of your life are mostly the same, maybe with varied interactions or one more privileged than the other.

What elements? 🤔

Who —

  1. Situation (not Mike, sad life if you remember Jersey Shore. 😖)
  2. You
  3. People

When —

  1. Situation
  2. Time

How Much —

  1. Time
  2. Energy

Formula —

“Understanding who to prioritize, when and by how much.”

Note: Can’t include the N̶a̶t̶u̶r̶e̶ as you can’t deal with it sorry. (I think I’m smart 😂)

So..

Just like in a professional setting, you would feel stuck in something at a certain point in time and have a feeling that you don’t wanna spend the effort of growing past a phase because you know it can change you and sometimes we are unwilling, for it can be both good and bad…like in a relationship…

But if you made a decision to follow that path then why give up before that thing bears a fruit and matures and showers you with love, success!

Embrace the change! 🙏
