Over the last few months we’ve launched eight school sections on the new templates, and we’re still busy working on the remaining schools. We hope to have these finished in May.

Here are a few timely reminders for our CMS Editors on the legacy website, and our Web Champions on the new website. Unsure who our Editors and Web Champions are? Check here!

Pasting from Word

Please do not paste text into the CMS directly from Microsoft Word — it often copies across unsightly formatting. Instead, either first paste text into Notepad to strip out the formatting before copying onto the website, or remove formatting when you paste into the CMS using the ‘Paste as Plain Text’ or ‘Paste from Word’ icons.

‘Paste as Plain Text’ and ‘Paste from Word’ icons.

School and subject name changes

Some recent name changes which I am sure you’ll be aware of:

  • Keele Management School is now Keele Business School
  • Media, Culture and Creative Practice is now Media, Communications and Creative Practice

Please review the web pages that you own to ensure that any names have been updated. To do so, use Google site searches — for example, use this search term to find mentions of Keele Management School in the Academic Services section: site:www.keele.ac.uk/sas/academicservices “Keele Management School”

News vs Events on the new school pages

Our new school templates offer the opportunity to list both news and events on two separate carousels and sections. Please avoid listing events in both the news and events sections. Only list events within events, and news within news, to avoid duplication and confusion for Google which could harm our search engine listings

Expire, do not archive, when removing content

If you wish to take a page off the website, you must expire every piece of content on the page. The other option is to delete the section (page) altogether from the site structure, however this will make the content unretrievable later. See page seven of our T4 Site Manager User Guide for more help.

Images are challenging

We know about that, but that is why we call you the Web Champions :) If you get stuck — give us a shout, but please do not use poor quality, or incorrectly sized images as they have a negative impact on user experience.

We also run a checker every Friday morning for images over 300k (which qualifies them as “large”), so try to make your images 100- 200k.

The main challenge when it comes to images is editing to the correct dimensions and optimising for the web, and the best software to do this with is Photoshop. To find out more about having Photoshop installed on your PC, please contact IT (there is an annual licence cost).

For more help on editing images please see keele.ac.uk/websupport/styleguide/stylesandpatterns/images.
