My family and I are moving to a new house. Our current house is filled with so much clutter that we decided to dump almost everything and go for the ultimate minimal design in our new home (who doesn’t…).

First off we thought about the floors… Since our oldest son is allergic to a whole bunch of stuff we thought about what we can we do to make life easier for him… This means no carpet.

Tiles, wooden floors, laminate were our next choices to pick from but we bought a ”green house”. This means the floor can only have a maximum thickness of 4 mm otherwise the floor heating will not work optimally. So we dropped laminate and wooden floors from the list…

Tiles then? But neither of us like tiles that much… So we ended up choosing the most basic, simple solution we could think of:

Why don’t we just put floor coating on the floor?!

We could not have been more wrong in our choice if we tried…

We soon found out you can choose between 1- or 2-component coatings; epoxy- or polyurethane based or even acrylic dispersion paint…

All of these materials meant absolutely nothing to us so we had to dive in to the world of floor coatings; when should you use 1- or 2- component based coating, polyutherane or epoxy, what is it made of; which is better to clean, most durable, least sensitive to damage from sunlight, furniture and playing kids?..

After long and hard research we decided to go for a 2-component polyutherane coating. But then we learned that before you can even think about applying it you first have to clean the floor rigorously, then grind it, prime it, cover it with an extra leveling layer, grind that, then prime it again and only then you can start applying the desired coating. The coating itselve then has to be applied within an x amount of time and preferably 2 or 3 times depending how well you carried out the first 25 phases…

I won’t bother you with more gruesome details and will post the results if and when we ever get it done but for now I think I made my point when I say that sometimes keeping it simple can be a difficult task.
