It can be hard to find a movie that’s actually scary. The production quality may be bad, the acting may be terrible, or the story itself may be weird. This is why I love found footage horror movies.

You may hate found footage movies, but I love them. It’s such an easy way to excuse a low production quality movie and just focus on the story. But since the barrier of entry for these movies is so low, it can be hard to find ones that are actually good. Often, there’s a loose reason as to why someone’s filming in the first place which for me, can really remove me from the movie. Then there are some, that really use the found footage genre to their advantage and make great movies. Here’s a few that definitely hit the mark on being low production but high quality.

REC (Shudder)

You’ve more than likely heard of ‘Quarantine’, the American movie that is based on this Spanish movie. They both center around the same plot: A news reporter with a lone cameraman are doing a story on a local fire station when a call comes in about an old lady trapped in her house. They ride with the fireman to continue their news story and end up trapped in the apartment building once it’s revealed that there’s a deadly virus inside.
