More than one in five Americans have gone without other basic necessities, like groceries, to pay their energy bills; nearly three in 20 receive at least one disconnection notice every year. Solar panels may be a reliable and long-term solution, but it’s not the only way to help the environment and lower the electricity bill.

Though more families than ever are struggling to make energy bill payments, it’s easy to overlook simple tweaks to help take the pressure off. Take an afternoon to check in on your home. maybe it’s time to reseal the windows, fix that leaky sink, and replace inefficient light bulbs. For families, encourage both kids and adults to be mindful of energy-sapping appliances like unused printers, gaming consoles, and TVs. Even small changes like this are quick, easy, and can make a huge difference once that monthly energy bill rolls in. All told, these measures combined can save up to $850 a year on energy bills — no solar panels required.

Take a look at this infographic for more on the current state of energy demands in the United States, how high costs are hurting families, and what we can do take control of our electric bills.
