Four Questions

The Constitution requires the President to “from time to time give to the Congress information of the state of the union, and recommend to…their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.” ¶ On Tuesday night, the President gave his final State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress. It is thus a fitting time to look back on his tenure in office, and to contemplate what his legacy will be. ¶ The very Constitutional text I cited above requires that the two branches work together. The President shall “recommend” measures, but he cannot dictate to Congress.

Lesson Learned; Trade Happy My Friends

It took years to learn the lesson and here are 8 steps you should take right now to trade successfully.I remember it was 2008. The stock market had crashed. Life as we knew it and the world would never be the same. Basically the world was over. Every trader I knew was freaking out. And Apple had fallen to around $80. I don’t remember what it was before the crash, but I think it was around $400. ¶ I was tough though. I took a $1000 of my money and a $1000 of a friends and bought 10 shares for each of us.

Why Information Grows

(the unpublished introduction)NOTE: This is an introduction I wrote for Why Information Grows that I did not publish (I canned it around May 2014). I am now sharing it with anyone that wants to read it. ¶ INTRODUCTION ¶ People are not born with the ability to fly, cure diseases, or communicate at long distances, but they are born in a society that can endow them with those capacities. This book is about how these capacities emerge from our species ability to accumulate knowledge and information, and how the evolution of…

The global economy in 2016

2016 will be marked by gradual rises in US interest rates, low oil prices and a continued economic slowdown in China. Global GDP, while…well below pre-inancial crisis highs, will speed up slightly from 2015 to 2.6% at market exchange rates and 3.4% at purchasing power parity (PPP). ¶ Advanced OECD economies will remain on a steady course, expanding by a little over 2% in PPP terms. Cheap energy will help: Brent will average US$53 a barrel in 2016. Aided by strong labour and housing markets, and recovering government spending, the US will grow by 2.4%.

The Economic Future : The Yield Curve | The New York Times | March 18, 2015

Yield curve 101 The yield curve shows how much it costs the federal government to borrow money for a given amount of time, revealing the…relationship between long- and short-term interest rates. ¶ It is, inherently, a forecast for what the economy holds in the future — how much inflation there will be, for example, and how healthy growth will be over the years ahead — all embodied in the price of money today, tomorrow and many years from now. ¶ Where we stand The yield curve is fairly flat, which is a sign that investors expect mediocre growth in the years ahead.

Announcing PreCog Research: A Data Driven Investment Research Company

I’m pleased to announce the introduction of PreCog Research, an investment research company started by Ivailo Zhelev and myself. We are an investment research company for the 21st century, utilizing data from the web to more accurately predict the earnings of publicly traded tech companies. Instead of making increasingly complicated DCF models, we feel that there is valuable information being provided by these tech companies hiding in plain sight. ¶ While we are trying to predict the future (hence the name!), instead of forecasting, we are “nowcasting” — describing the past more quickly than the company’s themselves…

Today’s Banking And Finance: Convenient, Ubiquitous, And Highly Perilous

The banking and finance sector has been hit particularly hard by cyber attackers this year — the month so far has seen disclosures from…Scottrade, E-Trade, and Dow Jones regarding customer data breaches. ¶ It’s become readily apparent that industries dealing in the world’s most sensitive and critical data are poorly poised to defend against the rising threat of cyber crime. ¶ Other industries such as healthcare and insurance have already been reeling from continued cyber attacks. And by now, most of the world’s largest banks have suffered brand damaging intrusions — leaving customers left with little recourse post-breach.

Minimum Wage Debate

Over the past few years, the topic of raising minimum wage has been gaining increasing attention through both Government officials speaking…their thoughts on it, and workers going on strike, demanding better pay. The thought that most of these workers share is that they should be able to make a living off of the salaries of their current minimum wage occupations, whether this be working at a fast-food restaurant or stocking shelves at local department stores. The workers of these small jobs in most cases are not able to upgrade their working status to a better paying position because of a lack of education or lack in the…
