Effect of Lyft & Uber to Our Society.
Since the inception of Lyft and Uber, are these company turning our youth in the community to a college drop-out as many young men and woman are now driving for them, or can we assume they are developing the economy at large? Can we agree they are providing a good and reliable means of transportation? The emergence of these two heavyweight transportation company are creating confusion in the society with both driver and rider having mixed feelings about it. They have different experience using their app.
The pros and cons of these two company in the society cannot be ignored. On a positive note, they serves as a convenience means of transportation and provide job opportunity for individual who loves to work around their time irrespective of their color, race and religion provided you are above 18 years of age and you are authorized to work legally. Their app is well designed and allows you to cash out your earning at your own convenience. Its designed in such a way that allows passenger to tips the driver. But on a negative note, passengers explained how they are being charged 5 dollars for missing their ride while the drivers also explain how they receive no payment for a no show by the passenger.
The government in their own opinion share the negative effect these two company have had on the public transportation system in the country has people now chose to commute with Lyft or Uber rather than to take the bus. Female drivers explain the challenges they face which is different from their male counterpart in the job. They explain how they were being harassed by male passenger which is affecting their rating and earnings. passengers also explained how they were being charged cancellation fee for cancelling a ride, or when they didn't show up on time for a ride they had requested for.
Moving forward, Lyft and Uber has created millions job opportunity for people as you are allowed to work whenever you want to. My friend Catherine who is a single mom with two kids quit her job last year September in order to work for lyft. She quit because she finds it difficult taking care of the kids alone, dropping and picking them up from school in the afternoon. She explained to me that she only drive with uber from 8 am to 2 pm and she would still make the same amount of money she earned when working for her previous employer or even more. As a student, due to the flexibility of working with lyft app, i was able to work full time for lyft after class with no problem.
The effect of lyft and uber on public transportation is growing everyday as people can not withstand the wait times at the bus station. Some describe taking the bus as time consuming, unsafe condition and the cleanliness has been called into question as people dump wastes around. Uber and Lyft passenger explained hoe they are enjoying their convenience. The flexibility in cashing out earning by the driver is a added bonus because most times i would transfer my money into my account everyday. Drivers are being charged 50 cents per transfer.
Female drivers on their side share their experience on how male passenger are always trying to harass them sexually. Some of them says male rider try to touch, kiss and hug them in an unpleasant way. They explain how they feel insecure driving at night due to the experience with riders. They further by saying these act from rider affect their earning negatively as they couldn't work as much as they would love to. They explain how they grow in fear everyday driving for Lyft or Uber.
Despite the circumstances surrounding these two huge transportation company, they have help bail people out of their difficulties. starting with the creation of jobs which now allows people with no degree to earn sufficient amount to cater for their family. Its effects on single mother going through hell in balancing their work life with their kids are being ease working for Uber and lyft, although the challenges they face from male passenger are quite common because sexual harassment has been in existence for long both at work and outside work so i believe they should be able to navigate their way around without having any negative effect on their work life.
Finally, these two heavy weight company has brought more good than harm to our society and we should embrace it with open arms as they have become our part and puzzle. They have make weak households stronger than they were many years ago and the convenience of driving or riding with them is a joy to watch
