My Jaffna Village House
Jaffna is my beloved to Srilanka, my hometown Pallai, a small village situated near Vavuniya in Srilanka. It is tropical village. about thousand people live in house, with my village. There are a lot of Hindu temples in my village. We had a regular four-bedroom, 2 small guest rooms, 2 bathrooms and one shower bath, and the front door of the house was connected to the gate of the garden. We got water for daily needs through the well. This house was built by my parent’s great grandparents. Everything still is in the same condition and hasn’t changed from the Indian traditional style for example Each Indian state has its own house architecture within each state different communities (also called caste) has their own way of building house. The house was surrounded by nature and gardens. When I woke up in the fresh morning sunshine at our house in Jaffna, I felt a natural breeze, and the rooster crowed every morning, I watched the birds flying in the sky and singing in the trees, I smelled the firewood stove, I can’t explain how I enjoyed it.
When I lived in a large family, we got lots of love, help and fun. There are more people around to talk and listen to. Children in a large family are happier because they play together and keep each other company. I lived in a joint family, with my dad, mom, older brother, younger brother, younger sister, my grandma, and grandpa in a nice and quiet neighborhood. My older brother helped taking care of his younger brothers and sisters. They also gave their parents a chance to do other things. The older children who had received discipline and were taught how to behave by my grandparents, were now able to teach their younger siblings, to share their knowledge with them. This house taught me a lot of good habits and discipline, and I’m proud of myself because now I’m outgoing, and I fit well in society. My mom taught me better communication skills and made me able to reach my everyday goals.
My bedroom is quite large it had a single bed, a cupboard, a study table, a chair, and dressing table, It was simple, but very comfortable. I liked to stay in my room because for me it was the most relaxing place in the whole house. I could play and music I wanted. It was my little kingdoms.
There was nothing in our life that was more valuable than health, so we used to eat very healthy. The kitchen was one of my favorite parts of house because my mom and grandma spent a lot of time there. We used to have fun chatting, and we shared sad moments with each other. I felt more relaxed because our relationship in the kitchen was as strong as a rope link. It was rare that we ate out in our village house, but sometimes it was only when we went to the market to buy groceries. Only at that time, did we go to the restaurants. We produced our daily needs of vegetables in our farm and cooked then very clean and natural vegetables were used for cooking in our home. Everyday my mom and grandma were cooking in the kitchen for the benefit of everyone. Our health and well being were a result of love, and my kitchen was a very memorable place. When I cook in the US, the smell reminds me of my mom and grandma, I missed my village organic food and I feel go back to my village.
Most of the women in the villages spent their spare time doing embroidery, decorating their houses, gardening, and making marvelous handcrafts which entertain them and also provide financial support. In the evening, we sat in the outer courtyard or under the shady trees and talked about different old generation stories or our birth story. Sometime, other women got together in their house and there sat on the mats under the open sky and did their work for fun.
This Jaffna village house is the first witness to my real happiness, love, sadness, and all stubborn, quarrel the feelings I felt there. I think my mother’s home is the best place in the world and it is my most favorite place in the whole world. I felt,I got true relationship and I spent the best time of my life in my Jaffna village house.
