“Stand and Deliver”
H. Jackson Brown, Tr. Said, “The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.” “Stand and Deliver” is a very good movie, which one my ESL 6 teacher put in class. This movie really inspired me and all my classmates. In this movie I could see how a professor gives all himself to his students, just to see them to give their best and to achieve their goals. Mr. Escalante was a math teacher who believed in his students, and that every student just need the right motivation to learn what they propose to. Escalante used to make different methods to show his students how to get to the right way to success. I really love the way that Mr. Escalante used to teach, and I think that we need more professors like him today’s days to be better students and people in life.
First of all, the most important thing that a teacher should have is believed in his or her students, and help them to be a better people not only in the class but also in life. Escalante was a very good example of this. He used to push his students to try their best, and tell them that is always another opportunity to do it again, and never give up. He used to believe in his student’s capacity to learn what they proposed to. Even though he used to have many types of students as many with good manners and with bad manners, he was always focus in get the better part of every one of them. Sometimes, he used to use many rude words with his students but at the end he got most of his students in the same way to success in the class and in life. He made them very strong and made them to believe in their self. Escalante always taught his students not to be conform with what they had but always aspired to have the best things in their life.
Secondly, Mr. Escalante was always care for his student’s well-being. He always said to his students, “If you do not have desire, I will give it to you because I am an expert.” He used to give a lot of motivation to his students. The type of motivation that most of professors should have today’s days for their students. He put his students to work very hard every day. But he always gives motivation to them for keep going. For example: In his classroom was a student who could not managed calculus, Escalante send him to do a problem in the board, but he said that, “it was not for him” even though Mr. Escalante told him to keep going and try to do his best because he can. Escalante also said to him, “if others can do it, why you cannot do it.” This was a very good example of motivation that a professor should give to their students. Motivation is a very strong power that you can give to anyone to achieve anything in life.
Finally, Escalante used to use different methods to show his students how to get to the right way to success. For example: when Escalante made his students to go summer school to work very hard for the states test, because if they did not pass it. They were not able to graduate from high school. Some of the students did not like the idea to go in summer to school because they wanted to enjoy the summer with their friends and family but Escalante said to them, that in life everything has to be a sacrificed, at the end all of them went to the summer classes. As a result, all of them pass the test with a very high grade, this was something unbelievable because some of the students were very bad in calculus, and they used to have a very bad record in school because of their grades. When Escalante came to this school everything changes because he put desired in his work to get those students the best of them. He also used to go to every student’s house to talk with their parents. Some of the parents did not want to send their children to school, because they preferred that their children worked instead of study. He always advised them, and give them lessons for life. For example, he always said that, they always have to think in their future and not only in what they are living now. He said to his students that they always have to be prepare for what is coming up, fight for their goals and never give up. “Never give up,” was the magical words that this professor always used to motive his students.
Sometimes, we just need to be around people who inspired us and motived us to do our best, and tell us do not give up because out there is always another opportunity to start again and give the best of you. You need to be around positive people with big desire in life to achieve your goals. I wish there will be more professors like Mr. Escalante. I think if we might have more professors like him our education, and society will be better. I really recommend this movie because I think that is very good for everyone that want to success in life.
