Can you imagine yourself having dinner at the best restaurant in Latin America at least once in your life? According to the organization 50 Best, the best restaurant in Latin America is called Maido and is located in Lima, Peru. This country has been chosen as the best gastronomic destination in Latin America and the world, for the eighth consecutive time, in this edition of the World Travel Awards 2019 which has made the South American country in the eyes of the world. Maido is one of its main representatives in this type of world events, however this restaurant goes beyond the awards it has received. This restaurant is characterized by having created a harmony of flavors between Peru and Japan, giving rise to what we know today as Nikkei food. Maido is loved by his guests due to his excellent and novel food, a unique atmosphere and a very charismatic chef, however not many people can afford this kind of experience.

Mitsuharu Tsumura was born in Lima but his family comes from Osaka, Japan. Tsumura is the owner of the famous Maido restaurant who is also a renowned chef worldwide due to the achievements he has obtained over time. Mitsuharu studied gastronomy in the United States where he learned a lot about international food but his dream was always to set up a Nikkei food restaurant in Lima; That is why he had to travel to Japan to learn the art of Japanese cuisine in order to open his first restaurant called Maido in 2009.

In order to understand Nikkei cuisine, we must know that the preparation is based on Peruvian products with some oriental touches, on the other hand the techniques used for the preparation are Japanese techniques. Dishes such as ceviche or sushi are perfectly combined with some extra ingredients to enhance their flavors and thus create new dishes such as Ceviche Nikkei, Avocado Tofu or Octopus Sushi.

Regardless of how delicious the food is, there will always be controversy regarding the prices demanded by these types of restaurants. For many people who come from abroad, these prices are not as significant as they would be for local people, that is why not all people are economically eligible to enjoy these incredible dishes. The menu is very varied and there are many options for diners, one of them is the ‘Nikkei Experience’ can cost around $ 300 per person. Another option is to pay for each dish you choose from the menu, which have prices from $ 20 to $ 50 each. This makes Tsumura’s food one of the most excusive and expensive in the country.

Many people say that the best way to spend your money is on food and I would agree with it if it weren’t for the great prices of some restaurants. Paying $ 30 for a plate of food would not be smart since I could pay almost a third in some other medium quality restaurant. However, the Maido restaurant has achieved things that few restaurants throughout the Latin American region have been able to achieve, which is why it is worth living this experience even if it is once in your life since you are in the best gastronomic destination in the world, in the best restaurant in Latin America and trying dishes from one of the best chef in the world.
